What will Happend When You Quit Smoking?

You’ve read all the warnings, heard all the talks. And you’ve finally decided to stop smoking. If you’re hesitant to quit nicotine cold turkey, vaping could help you ease out of the habit or provide a better alternative to smoking cigarettes.

The decision to quit smoking could be one of the hardest you’ll ever make. It’s only natural that you would want to learn how it could affect your life. So what happens when you quit smoking and start vaping?

The Quitter’s Timeline

You might think that you have to wait a long time before quitting cigarettes yields health benefits. But the human body has astounding regenerative abilities. Your body starts flushing out the toxins from your smoking habit minutes after you stub out your last cigarette. Better yet, your body will get healthier within a week of your decision.

Here’s a timeline of the health benefits that happen when you stop smoking.

  • Within 20 Minutes: In less than an hour after you stop smoking, your blood pressure and pulse rate drop from the cigarette-induced heights and return to normal. Extremities like your hands and feet start warming back to their normal temperatures. Your lungs begin to heal and bronchial tubes inhibited by smoke start to become active again.
  • Within 8 Hours: Around this time, your body has expunged half of the carbon monoxide in your bloodstream. This revitalizes your whole body, as abundant amounts of oxygen reach your muscles and organs.
  • Within 12 Hours: Half a day after you quit, your body has reached its normal amount of carbon monoxide. This leads to decreased heart rate, as your heart no longer needs to pump strenuously to fuel your body with oxygen.
  • Within 24 Hours: After one day of quitting, blood vessels that cigarette smoking constricted have begun to expand, increasing your oxygen levels. Your odds of having a heart attack decrease.
  • Within 2 Days: Your body will expel excess mucus buildup from your lungs. Nerve endings damaged by your smoking habit regenerate, and your sense of taste and smell should improve.
  • Within 3 Days: By this time your lungs have started to heal the damage caused by smoking. Bronchial tubes restrained by smoke increasingly relax and expand. You’ll feel more energized and have an easier time breathing because of their increased capacity
  • From 2 Weeks to 3 Months: Your cardiovascular system will improve during this period. Each day without smoking strengthens your lungs, and you’ll be able to exert yourself without getting winded as much. Improved blood flow indicates a lower risk of heart attacks. Your sinuses become decongested and fibers in your lungs, that prevent excess mucus and bacterial infection, begin to regrow.
  • From 3 to 9 Months: Your lungs will steadily recover, letting you take deeper and fuller breaths. Restored functions will help you resist illnesses like colds. Women reduce the risk of premature birth.
  • After 1 Year: If you’ve managed to quit for this long, you’ve successfully halved your risk of getting a heart disease.
  • After 5 Years: At this point, your risk of developing cancers of the bladder, mouth, throat, and esophagus goes down by half. Your odds of cervical cancer or a stroke are now comparable to a nonsmoker’s.
  • After 15 Years: This is the amount of time it takes for your body to get rid of most of the health risks you’ve developed as a smoker. At this time, you’re just as likely to develop heart disease as a nonsmoker.
  • The earlier you begin your journey to quitting, the faster you’ll return your body to a healthy equilibrium. But if you need a manageable way to quit, consider an alternative to combustible cigarettes.
